Our Top 10 Spring Cleaning Tips

January 3, 2019

Spring has sprung! As tradition dictates, it is time to address all of the chores you have been putting off throughout the year. A seemingly never-ending checklist. Check out our Preparing Your Home For Spring blog, which is full of advice to further prepare your home and garden for spring. To start off the spring preparations we have devised our top 10 spring cleaning tips!
Our Top 10 Spring Cleaning Tips:
1. Work from the top down
Work from the top-down in every room, this can also be applied to the house in general – start upstairs and work your way downstairs.
2. Dust before you vacuum
Use a clean, slightly damp microfibre cloth to wipe dust from surfaces. Do not forget to dust up high; lampshades and tops of furniture and cupboards as these often get missed. And always vacuum last, once the dust has settled.
3. Dump or donate
Create designated ‘dump’ and ‘donate’ piles. If clothes and furniture are in good condition donate them to your local charity shop or look at ‘upcycling’ them.
4. Get clean, go green
You do not have to spend a fortune on cleaning products and chemicals to make sure your home gets a deep clean. To make an all-purpose cleaner simply mix 6 tablespoons of vinegar and 3 tablespoons of baking soda into 2 litres of water, pop it in a spray bottle and use as required. This is one of our favourite spring cleaning tips.
5. Do a Kitchen deep clean
Wash your walls, doors and window ledges with hot soapy water. Use soda crystals to clean kitchen cupboards and drawers. Remove any outdated tins of food, old kitchen gadgets, pans and chipped mugs and crockery.
6. Flip your mattress
This should be done every few months but often gets forgotten. Rotating the mattress from head to foot is also good idea to breathe new life into your mattress and help promote a good nights’ sleep!
7. Deep clean your carpets
Deep cleaning your carpets can help remove hair, dirt, dust and help revitalise the colour and texture. To breathe new life into your carpets enlist the help of a professional carpet cleaner who can do a very thorough job. Check out our list of approved local carpet cleaners here.
8. Remove pet hairs
Another one of our favourite spring cleaning tips is to use a pair of rubber gloves to remove pet hairs. The material the gloves are made from naturally enables the hairs to stick to the glove; definitely worth a try.
9. Clean the oven
We all try to dodge this job. However, short of getting in the professional oven cleaners the best way to approach an oven clean is; mix bicarbonate of soda with water, apply to the oven (avoiding the heating elements) and leave overnight. In the morning, the dirt should simply wipe away. If any soda remains, simply wipe away using vinegar.
10. Use your dishwasher power
Finally, use your dishwasher to clean childrens' plastic toys (remove the batteries first!). Simply place the toys into the dishwasher, along with your normal washing tab. This will remove any lingering germs on the toys with minimal effort!
